Introducing Pittsburgh Modular Taiga Keyboard

Innovative Analog Technology

Taiga is a complete, modern, modular instrument that allows us to explore beyond the boundaries of a traditional analog synthesizer. The sound of Taiga can be attributed to three uniquely Pittsburgh innovations. A trio of huge analog oscillators, the unmistakably smooth sound of the Pittsburgh Filter, and the warmth of our Dynamics Controller. These enable us to not only create sounds that we would traditionally expect from an analog monosynth, but to also explore new sonic textures and performance possibilities.

Unique to Taiga Keyboard

Taiga Keyboard’s larger format provides the room for a few unique features. Most obvious is a full size 37 key premium keybed with velocity and aftertouch. The dedicated pitch and modulation wheels offer instant access to a unique set of modulation tools including manual control, clock sync’d LFO, envelope, and random source. 1/4 inch left and right output jacks, and full sized MIDI in and MIDI out DIN jacks are available on the rear of the instrument. The larger format also allows Taiga Keyboard to utilize larger, more spread out knobs and a second analog LFO.

Taiga Keyboard also includes a first-of-its-kind, 24hp Eurorack format modular expansion bay. The fully modular signal path of Taiga means modules can be inserted into any point of the signal path. Install a 4th or 5th oscillator into the expansion bay and create truly monster sounds. Additional filters allow for an expanded sonic palette. Add a sampler, sequencer, complex digital effects, or even a Maths. The integrated Eurorack expansion bay allows Taiga Keyboard to be customized to meet the unique needs of any artist.

Taiga oscillators

Waveforms generated by the three Taiga oscillators stretch beyond the basic geometric shapes and sounds associated with analog synthesis. Taiga waveforms pass through up to three proprietary, cascading waveshapers designed to precisely manipulate their symmetry and harmonic content. In addition, each oscillator includes a robust six-stage wave folder to add even more complexity and depth to the diverse sonic palate of Taiga.

The “Pittsburgh Filter”

The Pittsburgh filter has defined the sound of Pittsburgh Modular from the moment it was introduced. A signature gummy and relaxed sound with no dead spots that has been tweaked to perfection. It offers a warm, smooth sweep through the full frequency range and a sweet resonance that does not roll off the low end. This generation of the Pittsburgh filter is specifically designed to ensure a remarkable interplay with Taiga’s oscillators.

Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller

Pittsburgh's new Dynamics technology imparts Taiga with a uniquely organic depth and presence. By simultaneously managing both amplitude and harmonic content, the Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller expands beyond the one-dimensional VCA found in other synthesizers. It does this by utilizing new advancements from traditional low pass gates to add additional definition and dimension to the voice of Taiga. When used in low pass gate mode, sounds shed harmonic content and become warmer as they decrease in volume. This mimics how sound waves react to their environment. Because of this connection, the Taiga sounds more natural or complex compared to other instruments.

Echos, Mixer, MIDI, and Much More

Pulling no punches in rounding out Taiga’s capabilities, Pittsburgh has included MIDI to CV conversion, mixer, preamp with soft clipping overdrive limiter circuit, analog bucket brigade delay, dual envelope generators, digital multi-modulation tool, LFO, noise generator, clock-synced arpeggiator, and an internal clock with tap tempo (can be externally synced too). You can use Taiga without patching or dive into its 60 patch points to use its components as separate modules with external devices or reroute its internal patching. The creative possibilities abound!

Price, Availability, and More Information

The suggested retail price for Taiga Keyboard is $1299. Taiga Keyboard is available now through the US Cre8audio web shop, EU Cre8audio web shop and authorized resellers worldwide. More information for Taiga Keyboard is available at pittsburghmodular.com/taiga.

Introducing Local Parks, An Experimental, High Harmonics Oscillator

The Pittsburgh Modular Local Parks is drawn from our waveform manipulation research where advanced approaches to wave shaping throughout the oscillator showcase new sounds and unique waveforms. A full compliment of robust waveforms and modulation options paired with unmatched waveshaping creates a truly modern analog oscillator.

Our in-depth experimentation has created pulse waves which can be manipulated in multiple dimensions utilizing both Pulse Width and Pulse Shift. Pulse Shift creates an adjustable “step” within the pulse wave to further enhance the harmonic content of the wave. The wave used to create the pulse can be switched between sine and saw for additional sonic variation.

The Blade Wave is a morphing saw wave pitched one octave above the core frequency of the oscillator that smoothly shifts back to the core frequency as it changes shape. This creates a chorus-like effect on the sound of the Blade Wave without ever falling out of tune.

A Binary Logic waveform further expand the distinct sonic palette of the Local Parks. First utilized in our Narwhal Cymbal module, this waveshaper uses analog binary logic to create everything from gate effects to atonal bell like tones. The pulse and blade waves can be summed with the binary output for even more complex results.

Local Parks includes a built-in voltage controlled modulator to handle the bulk of modulation needs. This ensures that Local Parks can be a dynamic oscillator that produces evolving, high harmonic sounds within any eurorack setup.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for Local Parks is $339 USD. Because this module is considered an experiment, production has been limited to 200 modules. Local Parks is available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding Local Parks Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

Introducing The Toad, A 12 Stage Analog Phase Shifting Experience

The Safari Series continues to provide artists with an advanced preview of innovative new concepts stemming from our research and design process. The seventh Safari Series reinvigorates the sound of one of our favorite vintage Pittsburgh modules.

Pittsburgh Modular The Toad phase shifter is a creamy, 12 stage, all analog effect module designed to expand on the classic swirls, rich swooshes, and doppler effects associated with the phaser.

The Toad has a single 12 stage audio signal path to create a very rich, full sound. Dual phased audio outputs are tapped from stages 7 and 12 and can be used together for wide, flowing, stereo effect. Each output has a switch that allows the phased signal to be mixed with a positive or inverted dry signal resulting in even more sonic flavors to melt with.

An attenuverting CV input and onboard triangle LFO allows for maximum flexibility for custom modulation options. Feedback can be positive or negative and The Toad is more than happy to self oscillate in either direction.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for Toad is $299 USD each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 modules. The Toad available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding The Toad 12 Stage Analog Phase Shifter Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

Introducing a Pair of Vintage Inspired Mixers and a Fish Themed Buffered Mult!

Pittsburgh Modular Safari Series 6 feeds on our love of fish and vintage mixers. The 2+2 Okapi and Stereo Okapi mixers use our newly developed soft compression/saturation circuit add vibe to any mix and the Koi is a quality fish themed buffered multiple.

2+2 Okapi Mixer & Stereo Okapi Mixer
Two different versions of the same idea. The 2+2 Okapi and Stereo Okapi mixers add a vintage console vibe to sounds by using soft compression and saturation to glue the mix together.

Both modules include per channel LED monitoring and two mixing modes. Clean mode utilizes the mixing circuit of the SV-1 for a transparent mixer that works great with both audio and CV signals. Saturate mode adds soft compression and saturation to the mix. This effect can be used subtly to add vibe or pushed further to press additional harmonics out of the mix. A global mute is available on both versions of the mixer as well. The 2+2 Okapi offers a mute and phase switch for each channel. The top two channels can be split off allowing the mixer to be used as two independent mixers. This is very handy for both small and large systems. The Stereo Okapi has a pan pot for each of the four channels along with a left and right output. Perfect as an output mixer or a sub-mixer for drums.

Koi Buffered Splitter
The Koi is pretty simple but very handy. Three chained, fully buffered multiples. Each section has a dedicated LED for keeping an eye on the signals. We know you have your choice of fish themed eurorack signal splitters, but we think ours is the best.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for the 2+2 Okapi and Stereo Okapi is $149 each. The retail price for the Koi is $99. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 numbered 2+2 Okapi, 200 Stereo Okapi, and 200 Koi. The modules are available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding the Okapi and Koi Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

More Drum Experiments... Say Hello to the Elephant Drum and Narwhal Cymbal

Pittsburgh Modular Safari Series 5 showcases our further excursions into the world of analog drum synthesis. Like the Llama Kick and Polar Bear Snare, these circuits were designed as part of a larger project but large projects move slowly and we are excited about these sounds NOW so a small batch of modules for us and our friends was necessary.

Narwhal Cymbal
Michael’s partner wanted a module called Narwhal that removes reverb. That seemed a little ambitious for a handful of resistors, capacitors, and op-amps, but we do like Narwhals and we were working on a new cymbal circuit that needed a name. All that said, the Narwhal Cymbal module sounds very nice. The Pittsburgh Modular Narwhal Cymbal is an attempt at reproducing the sound of a physical cymbal using analog circuitry. This module is not based on any famous machine. It is a unique attempt at a synthesized cymbal with a design guided by the concept of analog physical modeling. The result is something that sounds not completely unlike a cymbal, but with a sonic flexibility that swings far beyond the limits of a tangible instrument.

Elephant Drum
The Pittsburgh Modular Elephant Drum is a re-imaging of the classic Pollard Syndrum. Although not a clone of the original circuits, the Elephant was inspired by the flexibility and musicality of the vintage instrument. We think this one also sounds very nice. A variable waveform oscillator is rhythmically modulated (or not) to create complex percussive sounds. Built in Modulator (LFO) and Tension (percussive decay envelope) add depth and movement the oscillator. Voltage control over Tuning (pitch) and Material (waveform) allow for creative patching options.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for the Narwhal and Elephant is $199 each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 numbered Narwhals and 200 Elephants. The modules are available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding the Narwhal Cymbal and Elephant Drum Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

Introducing the West Pest! A West Coast Inspired Semi-Modular Synthesizer

The Heart of the Pittsburgh Sound
Designed in partnership with the very good humans at Cre8audio, the West Pest bends your mind with a unique set of analog synthesis tools inspired by the free thinking of the west coast by ducking traditional expectations for waveform manipulation and signal flow. The signal flow of the West Pest can be broken down into 3 core components. First, a beefy analog oscillator core derived from the mythical Pittsburgh Modular Voltage Lab synthesizer. Second, a custom designed 6 stage wave folder created to maximize additive harmonic content. And third, a dynamics controller created to subtractively manage both the amplitude and harmonics of the sounds.

Designed to Fold Oscillator
The West Pest oscillator is based off of Pittsburgh Modular’s core oscillator technology but is specifically optimized for wave folding. The raw sine, triangle, and saw waves pass through a proprietary warp circuit to expand the shaping potential resulting in big beefy waves that can be bent into new harmonic dimensions.

Folding into Another Dimension
The wavefolder greatly amplifies the incoming waveforms. However, instead of clipping or distorting, the circuit folds them back on themselves creating up to 6 folds or ripples that add vast harmonic complexity and depth to the sound of the West Pest.

Unique Dynamics Controller
The Dynamics Controller is a new type of circuit that's essentially a filter but behaves more like a traditional filter, VCA, and envelope generator all at the same time. When a note is triggered, the Dynamics Controller opens with a sharp, percussive attack. Once the note is released, the Dynamics Controller adds a magical, voltage controllable, ringing decay as the amplitude drops and harmonics are rolled off. The result is a more round and musical texture.

Price, Availability, and More Information
Price for West Pest is $249 / €249. The module is shipping June 2022 through the Cre8audio web shop or anywhere Cre8audio products are sold. More information about the West Pest Synthesizer is available at https://www.cre8audio.com/westpest.

Big Oscillator
East Beast takes advantage of the Cre8audio Capt’n BIG-O oscillator’s huge analog waveforms to ensure every sound has plenty of analog depth and weight.

Buttery Smooth Filter
The filter is an evolution of the first circuit Michael and Richard worked on together. With over 10 years of refinement, the Pittsburgh filter has reached new levels of buttery smoothness.

Price, Availability, and More Information
Price for East Beast is $249 / €249. The module is shipping before the end of May 2022 through the Cre8audio web shop or anywhere Cre8audio products are sold. More information about the East Beast Synthesizer is available at https://www.cre8audio.com/eastbeast.

Our Safari Has Taken A Dark Turn with A Filter of Crows, Dynamics Bat, and The Wolf Channel Strip

The Safari Series provides artists with an advanced preview of innovative new concepts stemming from our research and design process. The fourth Safari Series, affectionately nicknamed “The Scary Series” digs deep into the heart of the Pittsburgh sound with three dark, new experiments.

A Filter of Crows
Our classic Pittsburgh Filter pushed to the limits. The overdrive preamp from original Crow module paired with switchable filter response, resonance instability mode, and voltage control over both frequency and resonance. A Filter of Crows can be both menacing and subtle with a massive sonic palette. Shifting from buttery smooth sweeps to punishing, overdriven noise without ever sounding harsh or uncomfortable. This is the most interesting variant of the Pittsburgh Filter we have created.

Dynamics Controller Bat
Both a resonant filter and a VCA, the Pittsburgh Modular Dynamics Controller Bat is a modern re-interpretation of Don Buchla’s famous “lopass” gate. The original lowpass gate was limited to a static response time that varied from unit to unit. For better or worse, this made each lowpass gate a little different. The Dynamics Controller Bat solves this issue and expands on the original concept by adding a unique voltage controllable response curve and variable resonance to the lowpass gate. Nothing has more depth, sounds more natural, or feels more alive than the our Dynamics Controller. Not only is this module unique in the world of modular synthesis, it sounds amazing.

The Wolf Channel Strip VCA
The idea was to design a VCA that makes everything sound better. Through the use of a custom Wolf preamp circuit, parametric EQ, and a high quality, linear VCA, The Wolf adds depth and presence to any patch. A custom preamplifier with variable gain control shifts between .5x and 7x gain followed by a soft clipping limiter. Results range from fully transparent to warm saturation to overdrive depending on how hard it is pushed. A three stage, 15db EQ pairs sweeping low and mid range channels with a fixed frequency high shelf followed by a second soft clipping limiter identical to the one in the preamp to keep it smooth. Green, Yellow, and Red LEDs are both fun and informative! Located after the EQ and before the VCA in the signal path, the LEDs offer insight into the audio signal.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for the A Filter of Crows, Dynamics Controller Bat, and The Wolf Channel Strip VCA is $249 USD each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 A Filter of Crows, 250 Dynamics Controller Bat, and 200 The Wolf Channel Strip VCA modules. The modules are available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding the A Filter of Crows, Dynamics Controller Bat, and The Wolf Channel Strip VCA Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

Introducing Function Junction. Almost too many functions. But not.

We designed a thing that is many things!
Designed for our persuasive friends at Cre8audio, Function Junction came about because they thought that multi-function modules were confusing to use and were trying to accomplish too much, and therefore not really good any single function. We agreed and sent them the solution.

3 Modulators and a Mixer
Function Junction combines three classic analog modulation sources, ADSR envelope, function generator, and LFO. All are fed into an attenuverting mixer to create a complex modulation junction that can be used as 4 independent sections or in conjunction with each other.

The magic of the module is the ease you can flow from using its functions for basic everyday tasks to creating hyper-complex modulation. The sheer breadth of what you can do and the ease of doing it are pretty amazing.

Price, Availability, and More Information
Price for Function Junction is $249 USD. The module is available now through the Cre8audio web shop or anywhere Cre8audio products are sold. More information about the Function Junction Eurorack Module is available at https://www.cre8audio.com/functionjunction.

The Experiments Continue. Say Hello to a Llama and a Polar Bear

Pittsburgh Modular Safari Series 3 showcases the first results of our research into analog drum synthesis. These circuits were designed as part of a larger project but large projects are slow and we are excited about these sounds NOW so a small batch of modules for us and our friends was necessary.

The Llama and Polar Bear are an attempt at creating realistic(-ish) kick and snare drums using our own unique designs. These modules are not based on the sound of any famous drum machine, instead they represent a new approach to building synthesized kick and snare drums informed by the world around us. The results are something that sound not completely unlike kick and snare drums, but with a flexibility that bends beyond the limits of a physical instrument.

Llamas Make the Best Kick Drums
The Llama is a majestic creature known almost exclusively for the unique way it generates kick drum sounds when it is angry. Our module pays tribute to this soulful, sonic wonder. We think it sounds very nice.

Polar Bear Rhymes with Snare
Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend the majority of their life on the sea ice hunting for the perfect snare drum. Most hunts end in failure. However, with a little bit of luck, the Polar Bear is rewarded with a glorious snap! We think this one sounds very nice too.

Price, Availability, and More Information
The retail price for the Llama and Polar Bear is $199 each. Because these modules are considered experiments, production has been limited to 200 Llamas and 200 Polar Bears. The modules are available now through the Pittsburgh Modular web shop. More information regarding the Llama and Polar Bear Eurorack Modules is available at pittsburghmodular.com/safari.

Side note…
We designed a new set of knobs. This may be the nerdiest, and therefore the coolest thing we have ever done! Llama and Polar Bear are the first Pittsburgh Modular modules to ship with our new knobs. A color forward, modern design that pairs the soft touch exterior with a bold interior and integrated indicator. We now have four new knob sizes with infinite color options ready for all the future Pittsburgh Modular and Cre8audio projects!

Introducing Capt'n BIG-O Analog Oscillator with Folder and Overdrive VCA

A BIG sounding 100% analog oscillator designed in partnership with the very odd folks at Cre8audio.

Ride the BIG Waves!
Capt’n BIG-O is a serious oscillator with a Pittsburgh pedigree. The oscillator core at the heart of the Capt’n is an evolution of the Voltage Lab core. This gives Big-O’s waveforms a special, sonically rich, and warm fundamental sound that stands alone. Core modulation options include hard sync, pulse width modulation, and both linear and exponential FM.

Really BIG Wave-Folder!
The Capt’n includes a patchable wavefolder. Like the oscillator core, this wavefolder has its roots in the circuitry of the Voltage Lab but has been tuned to give it a BIG and unique vibe. The wavefolder can be used with any of the BIG-O waves or patched to an external sound source maximum flexibility.

Really, Really BIG Wave-Overdrive!
Capt’n BIG-O also includes a new overdrive circuit that adds instant warmth and fatness to any waveform. Like the wavefolder, the ins and outs of the drive circuit are modular so anything, including the wavefolder or external signals can be patched in. With a quick tweak, the drive circuit becomes an overdriving VCA adding even more possibilities to the deep sound palette.

Price, Availability, and More Information
Price for Capt’n BIG-O is $149 USD. The module is available now through the Cre8audio web shop or anywhere Cre8audio products are sold. More information about the Capt’n BIG-O Eurorack Module is available at https://www.cre8audio.com/captnbigo.
