The legendary designers of our favorite synthesizers used a handful of resistors and capacitors to establish the architectural foundations of signal flow and sound design. These concepts remain the cornerstone of our development process, enabling us push analog design forward through fresh ideas and new engineering. By standing on the shoulders of giants, the Lifeforms SV-2 offers an expanded palette of inspiring sounds and complex textures waiting to be explored.
Reimagined to the Core
Balancing the character of old school "East Coast" synths with modern possibilities, the Lifeforms SV-2 reimagines the classic analog signal chain by building on the foundations of the past. The result is an instrument that offers the organic warmth and power of vintage analog alongside the expanded creative potential of modern ideas.
We have redesigned our oscillator core to include Thru-zero FM and Phase Modulation. This allows the new triangle core oscillator to stay in tune even under extreme frequency modulation. To further expand the sound palette, our Pulse Symmetry waveform adds a second “vertical” dimension of modulation to pulse waves, enabling deeper and more evolving textures than standard pulse width modulation. Additionally, our proprietary Blade Wave creates a sawtooth variant that offers a dense, natural chorus effect through the manipulation of harmonic content.
Oscillator Details
Two Thru-Zero Triangle Core Oscillators with Pulse Symmetry, Blade, Sine, Triangle, Saw, and Random waveforms, On Demand Tuning, Thru-Zero FM, Phase Modulation, Linear FM, and Hard Sync.
Two voltage controlled Triangle Core LFOs with Triangle, Saw, and Square waveforms, Linear FM, Reset, High/Low Range Modes to cover low frequency and audio rate modulation. LFOs can also be used as a 3rd or 4th audio oscillator for very big sounds.
Square wave Sub-Oscillator with -1 and -2 octave outputs.

The Pittsburgh Filter is a critically acclaimed state-variable, multimode analog filter engineered to provide buttery smooth consistency across the frequency spectrum. Its architecture ensures that signal amplitude and harmonic warmth remain stable throughout the entire sweep, effectively eliminating the "dead spots" often found in traditional designs.
While the foundation of the Pittsburgh sound is built on precision and clarity, the Lifeforms SV-2 introduces a pair of unique Character modes and customized Overdrive to meet the demand for vintage-inspired grit and harmonic saturation. The Character modes recontextualize legacy signal-processing techniques to dynamically reshape the filtered waveforms. These modes are further enhanced by an integrated overdrive circuit designed to transition seamlessly from subtle thermal warmth to high-gain harmonic destruction. By combining these advanced processing tools, the SV-2 offers a comprehensive ecosystem for sophisticated sound sculpting, ranging from pristine analog textures to raw, industrial intensity.
Filter Details
Two Classic Pittsburgh Filters extended with Character Modes and Overdrive
State Variable Filter Core with Highpass, Bandpass, Lowpass, Combo, and Random filter responses.
Warped Character Mode modifies the shape of a waveform without modifying harmonic content.
Warped and Rectified Mode further changes the shape of a waveform by slicing the warped wave in half and rebuilding it based on the remaining wave. This has a vastly different effect on each waveform. (Sine to double frequency sine, triangle to double frequency triangle, Saw to Triangle, varied Symmetry Pulse response.
Variable overdrive offers up to 5x boost or 15db of gain.

Overdrive Injection
Harmonic saturation and overdrive are fundamental elements in defining the character and physical presence of an analog signal. While saturation provides a subtle enhancement of depth and structural weight, overdrive offers a more assertive application of harmonic power and sonic authority. The Lifeforms SV-2 integrates these essential processing capabilities directly into its personality, featuring six independent saturation and overdrive stages strategically distributed throughout the signal path. This comprehensive design allows for granular control over the harmonic profile of a sound, enabling precise sculpting from transparent warmth to aggressive distortion at multiple points in the synthesis chain.

Building On an Open Architecture
The Lifeforms SV-2 represents a complete architectural redesign of the original SV-1, an instrument that established the Pittsburgh Sound upon its debut in 2016. As our most successful synthesizer, the Lifeforms SV-1 was a pioneering achievement, serving as the industry’s first fully modular standalone voice. The Lifeforms SV-2 builds upon that prestigious legacy by refining its classic subtractive synthesis foundation. This updated iteration significantly expands the available toolset and sonic palette, augmenting the musical potential of the platform while maintaining the uncompromising power and unique character of the original instrument.
Lifeforms SV-2 has an internally defined signal path. Patch cables are not necessary to begin exploring. Plug the output into a speaker or DAW and Lifeforms SV-2 is ready to go with a robust but familiar workflow. When your ideas grow beyond the pre-defined signal path, an 84 point patch bay and Eurorack Expansion Bay open up a fully modular instrument with access to an even deeper set of features and tools.
